Setting goals which seem meaningful and achievable is a key motivator in your life. There are a few tricks to bear in mind here, as your brain is very sensitive to the formulation of such goals.

Right at the beginning, it is important to think about why this goal is so important to you. How would your life change once you have achieved this goal? Do YOU in particular want to achieve this goal? Or does this desire stem from the thoughts of others?

Once you have decided on a goal, be sure to check whether it is within your control to achieve it. Setting goals that are out of your control is incredibly frustrating in the long run. A set goal should definitely be realistic, achievable and meaningful for you.

Then it’s time to formulate specific goals! Please bear in mind that your brain doesn’t understand negations. Your subconscious thoughts and actions will take your formulations very literally. So when formulating your goal, always think about positive wording! Imagine what you WANT, instead of what you DON’T WANT. For example, if you think ‘I don’t want to dependent on my parents financially!’, the words ‘financially dependent’ will stick to your subconscious. If you choose the phrase ‘I want to be financially independent!’ instead, the words ‘financially independent’ can unfold their effect in your subconscious.

It’s also very important to use positive meaning when formulating your goals. This means that you incorporate words with positive connotations into your goals. For example, instead of ‘I want to stop being lazy!’, say ‘I want to become more active!’. Your brain and subconscious are much more likely to steer you in your desired direction with the words ‘more active’ than with the word ‘lazy’.

Last but not least, it is very beneficial to visualise your desired goal regularly. This can be done with a vision board that you place in a way that makes you see it several times a day. But mental visualisations are also an ingenious tool to emotionally bring you into a state of goal achievement.

Take 10 minutes of time. Create a calm atmosphere in which you feel comfortable. Close your eyes and imagine that you’ve already achieved your goal. Focus on how your everyday life would be different. How would you feel? What would you do regularly? What thoughts would you have? Try to allow these perceptions to be as intense as possible in your body. What physical changes can you feel?
