Visualisation: experience your body! In mental training, specific mental images are created to affect sensations in the body. Try it here!

What do vision boards and psychosomatics have in common? Everyone is talking about vision boards. A pictorial representation of personal dreams and goals is intended to remind us of them, create familiarity in our minds and give us the feeling that we are already ‘there’. We visualise the desired target state, which triggers positive emotions, generates pleasant physical sensations and guides our actions in directions that serve to achieve the target state.
Something similar happens when we turn to psychosomatics, i.e. the connection between the psyche and the body. Specific mental images can be used to affect sensations in the body. Athletes train this effect in so-called mental training and then use the trained visualisations and associated body sensations in competition.
Visualisation: experience your body! Try the exercises shown and take your mind and body on a journey of discovery about mobility, taste sensations and temperature.
For mobility: stand up straight and make sure that you can stretch your arms out freely in all directions. Stretch your arms to the side and turn your upper body as far back to the right as you can. Use your outstretched right arm to see how far you can reach. Then come back to the starting position. Now close your eyes and imagine your next rotation; visualise that you can rotate a little further than on your first attempt. Then open your eyes, rotate back to the right again and be amazed at the results.
For taste sensations: imagine holding a fresh lemon in your hand. Touch it in your mind, feel the texture of its peel with your fingertips. Imagine looking closely and admiring the colour and shape of the fruit. Imagine the juicy smell of the lemon. Finally, visualise yourself peeling the lemon and then taking a hearty bite. What happens to your mouth, your other senses and your body?
About temperature: if you are cold and want to warm up, think intensely about things that you associate with ‘warmth’ – the sun, summer, warm sand, a cosy blanket or a hot bath. If you are hot and want to cool down a little, visualise things that you associate with ‘cold’ – winter, a frozen lake, the fridge, ice cream, snow and wind. What happens to your mind and body?
Do you use visualisation techniques in your everyday life? Have you already tried mental training? Would you like to try it for the first time or deepen your current knowledge?
