Your date with life: ‘Your date with life takes place in the present moment; and the meeting point is exactly where you are right now.’

Living in the present moment has numerous psychological benefits. When we consciously focus on the present moment without being distracted by the past or future, we promote our mental health and well-being. One of the most important psychological effects is the reduction of stress and anxiety. Many anxieties arise from ruminating on past events or worrying about the future. By learning to focus on the present moment, we reduce our mental stress and find more peace.
In contrast, living in the past can have negative psychological effects. If we constantly reminisce or think about past mistakes, feelings of guilt and regret can arise. These thoughts prevent us from living in the present and can lead to depression and reduced self-esteem. Constantly looking back can also prevent us from moving forward because we tend to hold on to old experiences and disappointments.
Living in the future can also bring psychological distress, especially if it’s characterised by worries, fears or unrealistic expectations. If we are constantly thinking about what might happen in the future, we lose touch with the present and put ourselves under lots of pressure. Future events can often be perceived as a threat or challenge, which can increase anxiety and stress. An excessive focus on the future prevents us from recognising and enjoying opportunities and positive experiences in the ‘now’.
