Mindfulness – what’s actually the duration of ‘now’?

Mindfulness: about the ‘now’! How long do you think ‘now’ actually lasts? According to science, it only lasts 2-3 seconds.

What we as human beings perceive when we say “now” only lasts 2-3 seconds. Everything that happens before this is the past; everything that happens after this is the future

The definition of this term is very important for understanding the concept of mindfulness. Mindfulness wants us to be fully and completely in the present moment. We are allowed to feel and and be aware of ourselves in the here and now; every 2-3 seconds we’re able to perceive anew what is going on around us and within us.

The concept of mindfulness is particularly important in the treatment of depression, anxiety disorders and trauma. Sensing the present moment and observing what exactly you perceive and feel in those 2-3 seconds, without thinking about ‘before’ and ‘after’, is the epitome of mindfulness. This way of thinking prevents us from losing ourselves anxiously in the past or worrying too much about the future – it anchors us exactly where we are and should be at all times: in the present.

Mindfulness: about the ‘now’! If you want to practise mindfulness, try the following exercise: activate your five senses and notice what you can see, hear, smell, taste and feel. Treat these perceptions with respect and savour them by never doing two things at the same time. Focus on one thing at a time and do it 100% in the present moment:

When you sit, sit. When you walk, walk. When you talk, talk. When you think, think. When you eat, eat. When you work, work. When you argue, argue. When you make love, make love. When you rest, rest.

Do you have experience with the concept of mindfulness? Would you like to give this concept a bigger place in your life and learn more techniques?
