This technique helps us to relax and unwind in stressful times and is often used with progressive muscle relaxation and breathing exercises. To perform the safe space, all you need is a quiet place to sit or lie down, possibly supported by comfortable clothing, a blanket and, depending on your individual needs, some relaxing music in the background.

Make yourself comfortable in your quiet spot. Then try to find a place in your mind where you feel completely comfortable and safe – be it a room or a place in nature, be it a place from reality or from your imagination. This should be a place where you don’t have to perform or feel responsible for anything; you can just be there and be yourself.

Then activate your five senses and imagine step by step what you can see in your safe space: what colours, shapes, objects or landscapes are there to explore? Then concentrate on your hearing: what noises or sounds can you hear? In the next step, try to observe what you can smell: what scents or odours have a calming effect on you there? Then observe whether you associate your safe space with a certain flavour. Last but not least, observe what you can feel: is it warm or cold? Is the surface you are sitting or lying on rough or smooth, hard or soft? Immerse yourself completely in your safe space. Stay and relax.

When you have fully enjoyed the cosy feeling of relaxation and safety, you can blink slowly and start to move your fingers and toes to return to the here and now. Yawn and stretch extensively if this feels good and right for you. Realise that you can return to your safe place whenever you feel like it.
