Sometimes we tend to push our emotions away. We want to get rid of them, especially if they are negative or stressful. However, as you may have already realised, this only works to a certain extent, because we feel every emotion for a reason. So instead of repressing and suppressing them, we can pay attention. Emotions are our most important intuitive tool and therefore well capable of being a guideline for our actions.

Try the following exercise to get in touch with a stressful emotion:

1) Pause and notice what you are feeling right now. Which emotions are present and which of them is the most present? How exactly does this emotion feel? Observe whether you have a spontaneous idea as to why this feeling arises and what it might be trying to tell you.

2) Localise and visualise the feeling. Where and how do you feel it in your body? Is it tied to a specific area of your body? Is it a tingling, a pressure, a burning, a pulling, a flowing sensation? Try to sense whether you associate your feeling with a colour, a temperature or a shape and imagine it in as many details as possible.

3) Find a symbol that represents your feeling. Bring this symbol to your mind’s eye. Try to familiarise yourself with this symbol, sit with it and accept its existence.

4) Practise appreciating your emotion. Thank it for finding its way to you. Then breathe out slowly and consciously and visualise yourself letting go of that emotion.
