What’s the difference between looking at something and really seeing something? In the first case, we are fleeting, distractible; ready to move on as soon as something more interesting appears. In the second case, we want to stay in order to go deeper; we want to truly understand. The first is distraction; the second is mindfulness

Many people in long-term relationships do not find them exciting enough over the years. They look for adventure and perhaps even go searching for new love affairs, swapping their long-term partner for a possibly fleeting acquaintance. They long for desirous glances and passionate moments, whereby it sometimes seems irrelevant where this acquaintance will lead in the long run.

Such acquaintances are often entertaining, distractible and can be ended at any time as soon as we no longer find them interesting enough – or as soon as we are no longer considered interesting enough. In the eyes of our acquaintances, we are perhaps just a diversion – we are looked at with desire, but not truly seen.

After all, we may have a partner waiting for us at home who knows us in all our facets. A person who, after years of getting to know us, has not just fleetingly looked at us, but has truly seen and recognised and accepted us in our innermost essence. Looking at someone can be quick and pleasing, but really seeing someone requires attentive devotion, patience and depth. Which of the two do you want to experience?

About being truly seen: how do you feel about these two perspectives? Do you tend to look at people fleetingly and superficially, or do you do your best to really and truly see them? And do you want other persons to just look at you or to really see you?

Let’s talk about it in a free initial session!
