Being grateful opens up new perspectives on our lives – every day. Sometimes it is difficult to recognise the good moments of the day as we allow it to be overshadowed by worries and fears. However, we can try to capture at least a minimum of good moments every day – with the so-called ‘Happy Note Jar’.

‘Happy Note Jar’ stands for a glass jar that you fill with a new post-it every single day. Just before you go to bed, write a moment on this post-it that you are particularly grateful for and that you would like to remember at the end of the year. If you are feeling good, collect as many good moments as possible. If you are going through a difficult phase, write down at least one ‘neutral’ or ‘least bad’ moment of the day.

This exercise will help you to reflect on your day in the evening and realise which moments were particularly good for you today. Over time, you may be able to discover certain patterns, such as which people in your life are treating you well, which hobbies bring you the most joy, to what extent you can enjoy time alone with yourself and so on. Be attentive to these patterns and intensify your dedication to those things you’re writing on your post-its in the evenings. It’s best to put the glass jar in a place where you can see it easily and often. When you see the numerous post-its in it, it will remind you in challenging times of the beautiful things you have been able to experience in recent weeks and months.

If you don’t have a suitable jar at home and don’t want to spend money, you can easily do this exercise on your mobile phone by saving your special moments in the memos, for example. Practise this every day for a year and read through your notes at the end of the year. Be mindful of what made your year special and enjoy your own personal collection of happiness.
