Ever felt low and miserable, feeling like you’re not worthy, skilled, lovable or whatever?

Underestimating yourself, nowadays often called Imposter Syndrome, can cause lasting damage to your self-esteem and your sense of self-efficacy. This psychological effect causes a distorted self-perception and makes you doubt your competence and achievements despite obvious success. You may even experience a deep fear that others could ultimately expose you as a fraudster or cheater.

These feelings can be completely normal in some life situations – for example, when you take on new professional challenges or start to engage in a completely new hobby. However, if these feelings persist, it may be worth taking a closer look at the causes in order to initiate a reality check and self-esteem-boosting interventions.

Escaping the Imposter Syndrome! Remember a time when you were successful at doing something? When you developed some random skill? When you were brave enough to try something new and appreciating every small step while learning? When you got good feedback from others? When you felt liked or loved and belonging?

Remember how you felt. Stick to those memories which lift you up. Knowing who you really are, what makes you human, what there is to be appreciated about you and what you’re capable of, does make a difference.

By the way, the opposite of the Imposter Syndrome is called the Dunning-Kruger effect. Here we find distorted self-perception as well: those affected tend not to underestimate their competence and achievements, but to overestimate them, while belittling the competence of those around them.

Do you feel like you might be suffering from Imposter Syndrome? Do you know someone who would identify with the Imposter Syndrome or maybe the Dunnning-Kruger effect?

Let’s talk about it in a free initial session!
